USAG Bamberg: Overview

The United States Army has occupied the Warner Barracks since the defeat of the Third Reich at the end of World War II. At that time, the Headquarters of the U.S. Constabulary, which was a mobile unit of the 28th Infantry Regiment and the 1st Infantry Division, was established in Bamberg. This mission was to patrol the areas of Germany occupied by the U.S. Following the Cold War, the 279th Base Support Battalion was established at Bamberg. The battalion fell under the control of the 99th Area Support Group until 1993 when it joined the 98th Area Support Group out of Wuerzburg. The 38th Personnel Services Battalion HQ moved to the Warner Barracks in Bamberg. This entity is responsible for the command and control of personnel and postal units in the 98th and 100th Area Support Groups. The mission includes maintaining personnel records, issuing ID cards, personnel accountability, and the area of responsibility includes detachments and platoons in Kitzingen, Würzburg, Schweinfurt, Ansbach and Vilseck.

USAG Bamberg: Location

The United States Army Garrison Bamberg is on the Warner Barracks, which is positioned in the east side of the city of Bamberg. Bamberg is located in the center of Germany, so it is conveniently located to many major metropolitan areas in the country. In fact, Bamberg is only about 30 miles north of Nuernberg and 126 miles east of Frankfurt. The town is in the German state of Bavaria in Upper Franconia. It is also on the banks of the river Regnitz near the junction of the river Main.

USAG Bamberg: Interesting Facts

  • In 1950, the complex was named the Warner Barracks in honor of CPL Henry Warner, who was killed in action in 1944 in Belgium following his heroic anti-tank actions.
  • Almost every branch of the German Army was once stationed at the Warner Barracks.
  • The Soviet Berlin Blockade in June 1948 changed the mission of the post from occupier to defender.
  • Bamberg is one of the only cities in Germany that was not destroyed from aerial bombing in WWII. It avoided destruction due to the fact that it was located near a well-fortified Artillery Factory.
  • Recent archaeological findings revealed that the first settlements date back as far as 1000 BC.
