Eglin AFB, FL

Eglin AFB, FL 32542  |  Base Operator: DSN: 872-1110,(850) 882-1110

Eglin AFB: Overview

The major tenants of Eglin AFB include the 96th Air Base Wing (96 ABW), the Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC), the Air Armament Center (AAC), and the 46th Test Wing (46 TW). The 96 ABW is the host wing and is responsible for running the day-to-day operations of the installation, which paves the way for the other tenants to complete the overall mission of Eglin AFB. That mission is to ensure that our warfighters are equipped with state-of-the-art air-delivered weaponry. The AAC is responsible for all phases of this mission. The testing phase of the mission is accomplished through the efforts of the 46 TW.

Eglin AFB was originally a municipal airport, but was eventually converted into the U.S. Army Air Corps’ Valparaiso Bombing and Gunnery Base in 1935. The name change to Eglin Field was an effort to honor Lt. Col. Frederick Irving Eglin who was killed during a routine flight. The installation began as a proving ground for the Army Air Corps. Following the establishment of the USAF as a separate service and the name of the base modified to reflect that change, the basic original mission of the installation remained intact.
