The Regimental Headquarters for the 75th Ranger Regiment is also located here. The mission of Fort Benning is to act as a power projection platform which maintains the ability to deploy and redeploy Soldiers, Reservists, members of the National Guard, and civilians anywhere in the world at a moment’s notice. Additionally, this post strives to develop the most proficiently trained Infantry Soldiers and leaders, all of whom are instilled with the “Warrior Ethos.” In order to prepare for this mission, Fort Benning operates the U.S. Army Infantry Training Brigade, U.S. Infantry School, Ranger Training Brigade, Airborne School, and School of the Americas. The installation was established in 1918 in order to provide basic training to soldiers preparing for deployment to Europe during World War I. It was initially named Camp Benning in honor of Brigadier General Henry L. Benning who was a Confederate officer and a native of Columbus, GA. Following WWI, the post was closed since its mission was no longer needed at that time. However, in 1934, the Army reopened the post and established the Infantry School there commanded by General George Marshall. During WWII, Fort Benning, as it was now known, was home to a number of units, including the 2nd Armored Division and the 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion. During the years that followed, the installation hosted a number of different elements, but maintained its basic mission.
