Fort Dix, NJ

Fort Dix, NJ 08640  |  Post Operator: DSN: 944-1011, (609) 562-1011

Fort Dix: Overview

The mission of Fort Dix is to support the efforts of the U.S. Army Reserve Command in their endeavors, which include the training, mobilization, and deployment of troops. Both active duty military members and reservists are supported here. Now that the Army, Navy, and Air Force have combined to form the Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, these three services have combined their resources to reduce operating costs. The impressive level of military power located on this one installation will result in an expanded mission capability.

This installation began as Camp Dix when it was constructed back in 1917 in preparation for WWI. Considering its proximity to the seaports on the East Coast, it was an ideal place from which to train, mobilize, and deploy troops. Between WWI and WWII, the post served as a demobilization center and was utilized for a variety of purposes by the Civilian Conservation Corps. It was deemed a permanent Army post in 1939 and was then referred to as “Fort Dix.” During WWII, its mission was identical to the one it conducted during WWI. The post hosted a number of divisions during its history, and was even utilized as a Basic Training Center at one point.
