This post was approved for construction prior to the outbreak of WWII. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, the 4th Infantry Division moved to what was then known as Camp Gordon. Two other divisions moved to the installation during the war including the 26th Infantry Division and the 10th Armored Division. In addition, Camp Gordon was an internment camp for prisoners of war. Following WWII, the post was used to out process soldiers and as housed convicted criminals in its barracks. In 1948, the post narrowly avoided deactivation when the Army moved the Military Police School to Camp Gordon. That same year, a Signal Corps training center was established here.
