Fort Leavenworth: Overview

Fort Leavenworth is probably most famous as the only military installation that conducts the mission of serving as a maximum security prison for service members from all branches of the Armed Forces. The tenant that conducts this mission is the United States Disciplinary Barracks, which reports to the United States Army Corrections Command. However, Fort Leavenworth serves many other important roles, such as supporting the U.S. Army Combined Arms Center (CAC), which is part of the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC). The CAC places focus on developing the leadership skills, conducting collective training, Army doctrine, and battle command. The other entities that are located on Fort Leavenworth and fall under the jurisdiction of the CAC include the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, the Center for Army Lessons Learned, the Combined Arms Doctrine, Directorate, The Combined Arms Center-Training, and the TRADOC Program Integration Office-Battle Command.

This post has a long and storied tradition, and has the distinction of being the oldest active Army installation that lies to the west of the Mississippi River. It supported the western expansion of the United States, serving as an outpost for both the Santa Fe Trail and the Oregon Trail. It was also involved in a number of campaigns, including the Indian Removal Act, the Mexican-American War, and the Utah War.
