Fort Leonard Wood: Overview

Fort Leonard Wood is one of the most significant training installations in the United States Army. It is the home of the 4th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, the 1st Engineer Brigade, the 3rd Chemical Brigade, and the 14th Military Police Brigade. Considering that this post is the home of the U.S. Army Maneuver Support Center of Excellence, its mission is to prepare soldiers for the significant duties that they must accomplish.

The post was established in 1940 and was originally intended to train infantry troops. However, that mission changed to an engineer training installation in 1941 following the outbreak of WWII. Prior to 1984, the U.S. Army Engineer School trained officers at Fort Belvoir in Virginia. However, once that post closed, this school was consolidated. Another base closure in 2000 resulted in the relocation of other training entities. Due to Fort McClellan’s demise, the U.S. Army Chemical Corps and Military Police Corps schools were moved over to Fort Leonard Wood and became part of the U.S. Army Maneuver Support Center. This entity was eventually known as the U.S. Army Maneuver Support Center of Excellence.
