Fort Stewart: Overview

The most significant entity stationed at Fort Stewart is the 3rd Infantry. The 3rd Infantry includes four brigade combat teams, an aviation brigade, and other support units. The immense size of Fort Stewart, which takes up nearly 280,000 acres, provides a significant training ground for the 3rd Infantry. In fact, Fort Stewart is the largest military installation located in the eastern part of the country. The mission of this post is to support the daily activities of the 3rd Infantry.

Fort Stewart began as an anti-aircraft artillery (AAA) training center in 1940, preparing and deploying many well trained troops to virtually all theater’s of operation during WWII. The post also served as a POW Camp for German and Italian prisoners and operated a Cooks’ and Bakers’ School. Following WWII, the post was deactivated for about 5 years until the outbreak of the Korean War. The post maintained the role of training AAA personnel. The role increased to training Army aviators for combat roles in Vietnam.

Fort Stewart: Location

Fort Stewart spans five counties in Georgia, including Liberty County, Bryan County, Evans County, Long County, and Tattnall County. Being positioned in the eastern part of the state, the post is near the Atlantic Coast. In addition, the Canoochee River runs beside Fort Stewart. It has immediate access to two major interstate highways, which includes Interstate 16 and Interstate 95. The nearest metropolitan area is the city of Savannah, which is less than 45 miles from the post. Fort Stewart: Interesting Facts

  • Camp Stewart was named in honor of General Daniel Stewart, who was from Liberty County and fought in the Revolutionary War.
  • Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) were stationed at Fort Stewart during the Second World War. WASP's generally filled the roles vacated by male pilots who were sent to fly in combat.
  • Many of the U.S. troops that participated in the D-Day invasion disembarked for England from Fort Stewart.
