USAG Garmisch: Overview

The United States Army Garrison (USAG) Garmisch maintains three major entities which include the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies at Sheridan Kaserne, the NATO School in Oberammergau, and the Armed Forces Recreation Center. There are a number of other units and various Army facilities in the region that are supported by the USAG Garmisch as well.

Garmisch was captured by the 10th Armored Division of the United States Army in May of 1945. The Army then established the Garmisch Military Post and the Garmisch Recreation Area. The Garmisch Recreation Area is now known as the Edelweiss Lodge and Resort. The United States maintained this post throughout the Cold War, and in 1989 the Army decided to consolidate their offices, to include the Command Group, on the Artillery Kaserne. The Garmisch Community was changed to the Area Support Team (AST) Garmisch in 1994. The change to the current title, USAG Garmisch, was finalized in 2005.
