Hickam AFB: Overview

Hickam Air Force Base (AFB) is home to the headquarters of the Pacific Air Forces (PACAF). It is also home to the 15th Airlift Wing, the 154th Wing of the Hawaii Air National Guard, and the 515th Air Mobility Operations Wing of the Air Mobility Command. The 15th Airlift Wing, which serves as the host unit, coordinates with a number of support units in order to accomplish its mission, which is to provide airlift capability in support of PACAF objectives worldwide.

Hickam Field, as it was known following its dedication, became operational in 1938 to fill an Army Air Corps request to have an additional airfield in Hawaii. At that time, Hickam maintained the only runways capable of handling the B-17 Flying Fortress. The Japanese targeted Hickam during the Pearl Harbor attack in order to neutralize any airborne threat. Damage from that attack can still be found at the base. During WWII, Hickam Field was primarily used to train pilots and assemble aircraft. The secondary mission was to support the aerial transport of troops and supplies. This became a primary role for the base during conflicts following WWII and even earned Hickam the title, “America’s Bridge Across the Pacific.”
