Lackland AFB: Overview

Lackland Air Force Base, which is now part of Joint Base San Antonio, is the home of a number of major units. However, it is probably most notable for being the only base that conducts Basic Military Training for the Air Force. Many of the missions that are conducted on this installation were inherited by Lackland when Kelly AFB was closed. Therefore, now Lackland AFB hosts the Air Combat Command’s 67th Network Warfare Wing and the Air Force Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Agency. The host unit for the base is the 502nd Air Base Wing.

The base was originally planned to be part of Kelly Field and was constructed in 1941. It served as a training base for aviation cadets, providing them with a thorough knowledge of the physics of flight. After completing this course, the cadets would be sent to flight school. The Korean War expanded the role of the base to one that included basic training, and it significantly increased in size. The base eventually became one of the Air Force’s Air Education and Training Command (AETC) bases, and it trains many airmen right out of basic training.
