Langley AFB: Overview

The host unit of Langley Air Force Base (AFB) is the 633rd Air Base Wing. The mission of this unit is to ensure that it places the operational units stationed on the base in a position to successfully complete mission objectives. These operational units include the 1st Fighter Wing, the 480th Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance Wing, the Global Cyberspace Integration Center field operating agency, the 192nd Fighter Wing of the Virginia Air National Guard, and the Headquarters of the Air Combat Command (ACC).

Langley Air Force Base was established in December of 1916 to serve primarily as a flying field for all branches of the military, but was under the control of the Army Air Service. The other uses at that time included serving as a balloon station, observers’ school, photography school, and engineering department. Considering its location, it was perfect for providing aerial coast defense as well. The roles of the base greatly expanded during and following WWII. For example, the testing and development of equipment utilized for antisubmarine warfare took place here.
