Luke AFB, AZ 85309  |  Base Operator: DSN 896-1110, (623) 856-1110

Luke AFB: Overview

The host unit at Luke Air Force Base (AFB) is the 56th Fighter Wing. The 56th Fighter Wing falls under the command of the Air Education and Training Command (AETC). The mission of this wing is to develop the greatest F-16 pilots and maintenance personnel in the world. This wing consists of 27 squadrons, eight of which are fighter squadrons. In addition, the 10th Air Force of the Air Force Reserve Command maintains the 944th Fighter Wing at Luke AFB.

The base was originally intended for what it is still known for; training pilots. The first pilots arrived for training in June of 1941 and trained in the AT-6 Texan. After the outbreak of WWII, Luke became the largest training base for fighter pilots that the Army had in its possession. Luke experienced the same fate as many other installations following WWII; it was deactivated. However, the Korean conflict changed that, and training pilots once again commenced at Luke AFB.
