During World War I, the United States Army utilized the area beginning in 1917, with the purpose of training infantrymen for the battle fields of Europe, as an airstrip was yet not constructed on this base.  Buildings were demolished and the camp was closed on October 20, 1920, after which, Lindbergh used the parade field to practice landings and takeoffs before initiating his famous Atlantic Ocean solo flight.

At the time of World War II, MCAS Miramar was being restored and runways were completed in 1940.  This locality has experienced numerous changes and, presently, MCAS Miramar’s   mission is to support all aircraft operations taking place on the base.  It serves as a critical player in carrying out the Marine Corps’ mission to train, equip and deploy forces when necessary and to respond to crises around the world.

  • In 2006, the San Diego County proposed the development of a commercial airport at MCAS Miramar, however, the proposition was defeated because the public had made the decision that they did not want the military to leave and that the proposed combined use union would increase noise levels to an unbearable point and would get in the way of the needs of the military.
