MCAS Yuma: Overview

MCAS Yuma is the home of multiple squadrons of which are Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron, Marine Aircraft 13, Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron 1, Marine Air Control Squadron 1, Combat Logistics Company 16, Marine Wing Support Squadron 371 and VMFT-401. MCAS Yuma is presently the busiest air station in the Marine Corps because of its excellent year-round flying conditions and numerous acres of open terrain for air-to-ground weapons ranges and related restricted airspace for military flight operations.

In 1928, this area was named Fly Field and it was comprised of dirt runways which had been constructed for use by military and civilian planes.  When World War II broke out, the civilian airport was converted into the Yuma Army Airfield. This bases history includes occupation by the United States Army, Air Force, Navy, and finally it was turned over to the Marines on July 20, 1962.

MCAS Yuma is located two miles from Yuma, Arizona.  Other communities in the area include Algodones, Mexico, Somerton, AZ, Cuervos, Mexico, Fortuna Foothills, AZ, San Luis, AZ, San Luis Rio Colorado, Mexico, Ejido Hermosillo, Mexico, Guadalupe Victoria, Mexico, Delta, Mexico, Estacion Coahuila, Mexico, Puebla, Mexico, Mexicali, Mexico, Calexico, CA, El Centro, CA, Brawley, CA and the center of each of these cities is within 55 miles of Yuma, AZ.

MCAS Yuma: Interesting Facts

  • MCAS Yuma is a part of a joint civili-military airport, sharing facilities with the Yuma International Airport and it encompasses approximately 3,000 acres which are mostly flat desert wilderness.
  • MCAS Yuma houses squadrons conducting training for all Marine Corps tactical aviation units, a Marine Air Reserve squadron made up of both active duty and Selected Marine Corp Reservists and, also, provides aerial adversary/aggressor services and dissimilar air combat training (DACT) for all United States military services and for selected NATO, Allied Coalition partners.
