MCBH Kaneohe Bay: Overview

MCBH Kaneohe Bay, Camp H. M. Smith, Molokai Training Support Facility, Manana Family Housing Area, Puuloa Range and the Pearl City Warehouse Annex, which are all of the United States Marine Corps installations in Hawaii, were joined to form the Marine Corps Base Hawaii, with its headquarters at MCBH Kaneohe Bay on April 15, 1994.

MCBH maintains a Marine runway and houses United States Marines and Navy personnel as well as their families. A number of civilian employees also reside at this base. MCBH is the residence for Combat Logistic Battalion 3, the 3rd Marine Regiment, the Marine Aircraft Group 24 and the 3rd Radio Battalion.

President Woodrow Wilson selected this parcel of land on Mokapu Peninsula for military use in 1918. In 1939, a seaplane base was built by the Navy and in 1941, Army artillery units engaged this area. In the 1950’s, the Marines took over this area.

MCBH is situated on the Makapu Peninsula and located on the island of Oahu, twelve miles northeast of Honolulu.  Other communities in the area include Mililani Town, HI, Wahiawa, HI Pearl City, HI, Waimalu, HI, Waipahu, HI, Aiea, HI, Ahuimanu, HI, Ewa Beach, HI, Makakilo City, HI, Kaneohe, HI, Nanakuli, HI, Waianae, HI, Makaha, HI, Kailua, HI and Oahu is approximately sixteen miles from the heart of each.

MCBH Kaneohe Bay: Interesting Facts

  • Nine minutes before the bombing on Pearl Harbor, on December 7, 1941, the Naval Air Station Kaneohe was attacked.
  • One of the initial wave power projects in the United States since 2004 joined MCBH with Ocean Power Technologies, Incorporated, with the purpose of testing the generation of electric power from ocean waves. A PowerBuoy wave energy converter is utilized for this project.
