MCRD San Diego: Overview

The preliminary training of male enlisted recruits residing west of the Mississippi River is the primary mission of MCRD San Diego and the Marine Corps’ Recruiter School and Western Recruiting Region’s Drill Instructors School is also situated here.

In 1846, during the Mexican-American War, Marines made the first amphibious landing in San Diego.  The area was named after Joseph Henry Pendleton who was responsible for the establishment of the base in March of 1919 and in 1923, Camp Pendleton was commissioned to be the main recruiting center for enlisted personnel west of the Mississippi River.  The base was almost totally dedicated to recruiting during World War II and in 1948, it was officially designated as Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego.

MCRD San Diego: Interesting Facts

  • MCRD also houses the Western Recruiting Region Marine Drill Instructor's School and the Recruiter's School for the Marine Corps.
  • The closing of MCRD San Diego has been the target of a number of politicians because of its location being contiguous to San Diego's harbor and airport. The Marine Corps has an extremely negative position against any proposal of this type because of the position of the parade deck which is a valuable memorial to veterans of World War II, the Korean, Vietnam and Iraq Wars. The Department of Defense is also against this proposal because of numerous circumstances which would take place generating exorbitant costs.
