Royal Air Force Station (RAF) Mildenhall, England

APO, AE 09459  |  Base Operator: DSN (314) 238-3000, 011-44-01638-54-3000

RAF Mildenhall: Overview

Royal Air Force Station (RAF) Mildenhall is mainly occupied and operated by the United States Air Force. The main entity at the base is the 100th Air Refueling Wing (100 ARW), which is under the command of the United States Air Forces in Europe (USAFE). The primary mission of this wing is, obviously, to support aircraft of the U.S. and allied forces by extending their missions through in-flight fueling capability. The 351st Air Refueling Squadron (351 ARS), which employs the Boeing KC-135R Stratotanker, is the unit that conducts the operational portion of this mission.

This station was opened in 1930 and used by the RAF as a bomber base during WWII. Due to the onset of the Cold War, the use of the station was extended to the Strategic Air Command (SAC) of the USAF. This was an important installation for the USAF during that timeframe, since it conducted a variety of different missions from this location, including bombing missions, intelligence missions, and refueling missions.
