NATO has a significant presence on the base, which is made up of personnel from 11 different countries. Besides the American presence, the other countries represented at Ramstein AB include Belgium, Canada, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, and Poland. In addition, the United States Air Forces in Europe (USAFE) has set up its HQ at Ramstein. The first American use of the airfield assets, which are now on Ramstein AB, was toward the end of WWII. The Army Air Force occupied and utilized the airfield to support the allied advance. However, a significant American presence did not occur until 1953 during the Cold War. During the Cold War timeframe, Ramstein supported a number of different missions. Fighters, fighter-bombers, bombers, air refueling aircraft, and reconnaissance aircraft were all deployed from Ramstein at some point.
