Red River Army Depot: Overview

Situated on over 19,000 acres of land and having a storage capacity of over one million square feet, the Red River Army Depot employs over 6,000 civilians, tenants and contractors. This base has shown time and again that it can quickly adapt to the ever-changing needs of the Military, and will continue to play a vital role in its future.

Red River Army Depot (RRAD) was activated in 1941 for the purposes of creating an ammunition storage facility, but the onset of World War II forced military officials to turn the Depot into a general storage and tank repair facility. It also continued the same mission during the Korean War, Vietnam War, Operation Desert Storm, and Operation Enduring/Iraqi Freedom. Its location was originally chosen because of its proximity to the other training bases in Texas, as well as other nearby states. It has been slated for deactivation by BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure Commission) twice in its history (1995 and 2005), but was removed from the list both times due to its importance in providing maintenance support for the Army, and again, its location.

Red River Army Depot: Location

The Red River Army Depot (RRAD) is located in northeast Texas, 18 miles west of Texarkana, Texas, in Bowie County. It is also located 150 miles west of Little Rock, Arkansas, and 170 east of Dallas, Texas. Louisiana and Oklahoma are little more than an hour away. Because of its location, the RRAD is considered part of an area called “The Four States Area”, and is also surrounded by many small, close-knit communities.

Red River Army Depot: Interesting Facts

While RRAD had twice avoided closure by BRAC, the two bodies are still working closely together to make the base more cost efficient and to create more jobs for the surrounding communities.
This base conducts a process called “recertification”, which tests the functionality and safety of missiles that have not been fired for a long length of time.
