The two major entities that occupy the post include the Army Aviation and Missile Command (AMCOM) and the George C. Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC), which is run by NASA. The mission of the post is mainly the research and development of missiles and missile technology for use by the Army. In addition, NASA does extensive research and development on the post as well. This post was originally tasked with chemical weapons development prior to U.S. entrance into the Second World War. During the war, the Army tested a variety of incendiary weapons in preparation for the upcoming bombing missions on Japan. Immediately following the war, the Redstone Arsenal was used primarily to store chemical weapons. However, the rocket and jet ages brought a new mission to the post.
