USAG Ansbach: Overview

The United States Army established the Ansbach Garrison on October 16, 1991 and the 87th Support Battalion was assigned to it. Shortly thereafter, on November 27, 1991 it was changed to the 235th Base Support Battalion assigned to the VII Corps. The mission of the United States Army Garrison (USAG) Ansbach is to provide operational support to tactical units and to ensure that the right conditions exist so that the Combat Aviation Brigade (CAB) may be deployed more rapidly.

During World War II, the Nazi Regime utilized the Ansbach as a garrison. Along with the Hindenburg Kaserne, which was erected in 1722, four more installations were built in the immediate area between 1936 and 1938. Following the defeat of the German Army in 1945, all of these installations were occupied by the U.S. Army. The USAG Ansbach was home of the 1st Armored Division from 1971-1992.
