Brooks AFB, TX 78235  |  Base Operator: DSN 240-1110, (210) 536-1110

Brooks City-Base: Overview

Brooks City-Base, which was as recently as 2002 known as Brooks Air Force Base, is run by the Brooks Development Authority. This is a joint venture between the local, state and federal governments. The purpose of this venture is to develop the area into a center of science, business, and technology. The Air Force still maintains a significant presence here and the 311th Human System Wing (HSW) is the primary entity. The mission of the 311 HSW is to foster the development of and further the capabilities of humans and human-systems performance. The range of this mission includes the development of not only the individual, but also an entire force entity.

The name of the base is in honor of Sidney Johnson Brooks, Jr., who was lost in a flight training incident in San Antonio prior to World War I. The Army Air Corps established Brooks Field as its primary flight school until 1931. At that point, Brooks Field became the Army’s Aerial Observation Center. This mission continued into the World War II era, but was terminated in 1943. The installation was then used for training B-25 crews. Once the Air Force was established as a separate service, the installation became known as Brooks Air Force Base. Basically, the base has been, for lack of a better term, a center for research since the 1950’s.
