The mission of the installation is to maintain America’s Contingency Corps, which possesses forces that are prepared to respond through the land, air, and sea and fight upon arrival anywhere in the world. Other units stationed at Bragg include the Corps Support Command, the 525th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade, the 16th Military Police Brigade, the 108th ADA Brigade, the 44th Medical Command, the 18th Fires Brigade, and the 20th Engineer Brigade. Fort Bragg has been considered the home of the Airborne since the development of this type of warfare, which was during World War II. The post was originally established in 1918 and named Camp Bragg in honor of Confederate General Braxton Bragg, a native of North Carolina. During its earlier years, the post was generally used to train and maintain artillery units. The ranks of Fort Bragg swelled significantly during WWII to include the 9th Infantry Division, 2nd Armored Division, 82nd Airborne Division, 100th Infantry Division, and the field artillery units that were already stationed here. Since then, the Airborne contingency at Fort Bragg grew tremendously and remains the primary focus of the post.
