Fort Carson: Overview

The major units stationed at Fort Carson include the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Brigade Combat Teams. These brigades fall under the command of the 4th Infantry Division. In addition, Fort Carson is the home of the 10th Special Forces Group, the 71st Ordinance Group, the 4th Engineer Battalion, the 759th Military Police Battalion, the 10th Combat Support Hospital, and the 43red Sustainment Brigade. The mission of the tenants depends upon the entity. However, the basic mission of the installation is to ensure that combat readiness is maintained.

Fort Carson was established as a response to our entrance into the Second World War. The construction of the installation was completed in early 1942. The post was activated as Camp Carson and was initially utilized to train soldiers for combat duty. Once the installation was deemed an Army fixture, it evolved into a site that had the ability to accommodate permanent units. Since its establishment, this post has hosted nine divisions.

Fort Carson: Location

Fort Carson is located in El Paso County in Colorado near Colorado Springs. Pueblo is only about 30 miles to the south. Denver is also nearby, being only about 60 miles to the north. Some geographic landmarks in the area include Pikes Peak and Fountain Creek. In addition, Fort Carson is near the geographic center of Colorado. Fort Carson: Interesting Facts

  • The namesake of this installation is General Christopher "Kit" Carson, who was an Army scout and explored the West in the 1800's.
  • The first major unit to be stationed at Camp Carson was the 89th Infantry Division.
  • Camp Carson was utilized as a prisoner of war camp during WWII. Approximately 9,000 prisoners from the European Theatre were held here.
  • In 1954, the Army changed the name of the post to "Fort Carson" in order to signify the fact that it had become a permanent installation.
  • The PiƱon Canyon Maneuver Site was established in 1983.
