Fort Knox: Overview

Fort Knox is the home of the U.S. Army Armor Center and the U.S. Army Armor School. Soldiers, NCO’s, and officers in the U.S. Army are trained in their roles regarding the armored equipment utilized by the military today. The training includes becoming proficient in the operations of these technically advanced pieces of weaponry. In addition, the training covers tactical excellence and the maintenance of armored vehicles. U.S. Marines are sent here to train on the M1 Abrams. The Army Human Resource Center is now located at Fort Knox as well.

Fort Duffield was constructed during the Civil War on the land that is now occupied by Fort Knox. Following the Civil War, the land was used for a variety of purposes, including training and conducting maneuvers. The role of the post was expanded and was named after Henry Knox in 1918. Prior to WWII, the post became a training site for mechanized warfare. That role was greatly expanded during the war in an effort to counter the armored threat established by German armored units. Fort Knox has maintained the mission of training crews in mechanized warfare to this day.
