Fort Lewis: Overview

Fort Lewis, which has been consolidated with McChord Air Force Base to make up the Joint Base Lewis-McChord, is home to a number of major units of both the United States Army and the United States Air Force. Fort Lewis was established in 1917 and was originally known as Camp Lewis. The land was basically reserved for military use until an airfield, Tacoma Field, was constructed and opened in 1930.
