Fort Lewis, WAFort Lewis, WA 98433 | Post Operator: DSN: 357-1110, (253) 967-1110 Fort Lewis: OverviewFort Lewis, which has been consolidated with McChord Air Force Base to make up the Joint Base Lewis-McChord, is home to a number of major units of both the United States Army and the United States Air Force. These units include the U.S. I Corps, 2nd Brigade, 3rd Brigade, 4th Brigade 2nd infantry Division, 1st Special Forces Group, 2nd Ranger Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, HQ of the 5th Army, 62nd Airlift Wing and 446th Airlift Wing of the 1st Air Support Operations Group. The mission of this base is to provide support to the tenant units so that they may sustain operational readiness. Fort Lewis was established in 1917 and was originally known as Camp Lewis. The land was basically reserved for military use until an airfield, Tacoma Field, was constructed and opened in 1930. This airfield was later named McChord Field. McChord Field eventually became McChord Air Force Base and a stand-alone military installation. Tacoma is positioned just outside of the base to the northeast, and Olympia is a short drive down Interstate 5 to the west. Besides Puget Sound, the other major geographic landmarks in the immediate area include the Snoqualmie National Forest and Mt. Rainier National Park.
