Fort Meade: Overview

More than 100 units call Fort George G. Meade home. The major units on the post include the National Security Agency, the 694th Intelligence Group of the Air Force, and the Naval Security Group Activity. Considering that the orientation of the major units is of the intelligence variety, it is no surprise that the mission of the installation is one that focuses on enabling critical national security missions. This is accomplished by providing the tenant units with the facilities and infrastructure required to complete the assigned tasks.

Fort Meade was established as an Army post back in 1917 and served as a training center for many soldiers during both World Wars. It also was used as a basic training site and prisoner of war camp during WWII. It wasn’t until the 1950’s that the post took on the role of supporting intelligence roles when it become the headquarters of the National Security Agency (NSA).

Fort Meade: Location

Fort George G. Meade is in Anne Arundel County in Maryland just outside of the town of Odenton. The post is located near both the metropolitan areas of Baltimore and Washington D.C., Baltimore being to the north and Washington D.C. to the south. The major geographic landmark near the post is the Chesapeake Bay. Other communities in the area include Jessup, MD, Severn, MD, Odenton, MD, Maryland City, MD, Savage-Guilford, MD, South Gate, MD, South Laurel, MD, and Laurel, MD.

Fort Meade: Interesting Facts

  • The workforce maintained by Fort Meade includes approximately 35,000 personnel, which consists of military members, civilian personnel, and contracted employment.
  • The post is named after Major General George Gordon Meade who served in the Union Army during the Civil War. General Meade defeated General Robert E. Lee at the Battle of Gettysburg.
  • Fort Meade was originally known as Camp Annapolis Junction, and then Camp Admiral.
