Fort Sam Houston: Overview

Fort Sam Houston, or “Fort Sam,” is the home of the Headquarters U.S. 5th Army, the U.S. Army 5th Recruiting Brigade, the Brooke Army Medical Center, the Institute of Surgical Research, the U.S. Army Medical Department Center and School, the U.S. Army Center Brigade, and the U.S. Army Medical Command. The mission of the post is to support these major entities and ensure that the infrastructure and facilities are more than adequate to maintain operational excellence.

During its history, Fort Sam Houston has served in a number of different capacities, including a headquarters, a logistical base, a mobilization and training site, a garrison, and a provider of medical support. The original Army presence in San Antonio began at the Alamo, but was moved to its current location in 1876. Considering the prominence of this post, it hosted a number of innovations, including the birthplace of military aviation. The mission it now serves as a medical training facility began shortly after World War II.

  • The namesake of this post is Sam Houston, the first President of the Republic of Texas.

  • Both Brigadier General Billy Mitchell and Dwight D. Eisenhower were stationed at Fort Ord at one point during their careers.
