Holloman AFB: Overview

Holloman Air Force Base (AFB) is the home of the 49th Wing of the Air Combat Command. The 49th Wing maintains a number of capabilities due to the variety of aircraft that it has in its arsenal. The F-22 Raptor is the most impressive airframe, in terms of its potential combat lethality, that the 49th Wing has at its disposal. The F-22 has the ability to establish air superiority due to its assets, which include stealth technology. It serves other roles as well, such as ground attack, electronic warfare, and signals intelligence. The two squadrons that perform these roles with the F-22 are the 7th Fighter Squadron and the 8th Fighter Squadron.

The original plan for the base, which was constructed in 1942, was to serve as an overseas training program for the British. However, the outbreak of WWII changed the mission of this installation. It became a bombing and gunnery range for the Army Air Corps and B-17 and B-24 crews trained here. Following the war, the Holloman Air Armament Center (AAC) was established by the Air Materiel Command, which made the base the primary location for testing and developing unmanned aircraft, guided missiles, and other related programs.
