March ARB originally was named Alessandro Flying Training Field at the time of its inception in February of 1918.  It was later renamed March Field honoring 2nd Lieutenant Peyton C. March, Jr. who was killed only fifteen days after his commission in a Texas air crash and, at that time, was the son of the Army Chief of Staff Peyton C. March.  March ARB is one of the oldest airfields in the United States military and was the Strategic Air Command base during the Cold War for approximately fifty years.
