MCAGCC 29 Palms: Overview

The MCAGCC 29 Palms is the largest US base in the world, the largest military training area in our nation and houses the largest training program.  This training program is known as the Mojave Viper and is the model of pre-Operation Iraqi Freedom.  The forces contained on this base are the 7th Marine Regiment, the 1st Tank Battalion, the 3rd Combat Engineer Battalion, the 3rd Battalion 11th Marines, the 3rd LAR Battalion, CoD-3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion, MWSS-374, CLB-7, VMU-1, VMU-3, MCCES.

Two years before the United States became involved in the Korean War, the need for live-fire training increased as well as the recruits.  It was clear that more ranges were needed and personnel at Pendleton took notice to the abandoned Condor Field, formerly a World War II Army and Navy glider base. On August 20, 1952, MCAGCC 29 Palms, was created and is now known for its large-scale combined arms exercises (CAXs).

MCAGCC 29 Palms: Location

Being that it is a census-designated area, the base is officially known as Twentynine Palms Base, California, bordering the city of Twentynine Palms, which is located in southern San Bernardino County, CA and within the Mojave Desert.  Other communities in the area include:  Lake Havasu City, AZ, Blythe, CA, Coachella, CA, Yucca Valley, CA, Indio, CA, Bullhead City, AZ, Desert Hot Springs, CA, La Quinta, CA, Palm Desert, CA, Rancho Mirage, CA, Cathedral City, CA, Palm Springs, CA, Kingman, AZ, Brawley, CA.

MCAGCC 29 Palms: Interesting Facts

  • The Marine Corps submitted a land withdrawal application to the Bureau of Land Management in August, 2008, for possible base expansion for the construction of special use airspace which is necessary to train a Marine Expeditionary Brigade at the Combat Center.
  • The 29 Palms base is completely void of any bodies of water.
