MCAS Cherry Point: Overview

MCAS Cherry Point, North Carolina is a United States Marine Corp airfield and is the home to the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing and to the Marine Corps’ only Naval Aviation Department, which carries out work on aircraft and aircraft components utilized by Marine Corps, Navy and other services.  In addition, located at this base are the Naval Hospital and Combat Service Support Group-21 (CSSD-21).  The mission of the MCAS Cherry Point is to provide the United States with the most excellent armed forces, proficient of operating anytime and anywhere – to fight, win and survive.  MCAS also maintains a satellite field at MCALF Bogue, North Carolina.

MCAS Cherry Point: Interesting Facts

  • Construction of the Marine Corp Air Station Cherry Point began in November, seventeen days prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor.
  • The facility was commissioned Cunningham Field, in honor of the Marine Corps first aviator, Lieutenant Colonel Alfred A. Cunningham. It was later renamed Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point after a local post office which was surrounded by cherry trees.
  • During World War II, this base had a crucial mission to train units and personnel for service to the Pacific theater. In addition, this air station served as a base for anti-submarine operations with its squadrons responsible for the sinking of a German U-boat just off the North Carolina coast in 1943.
  • The Headquarters building was destroyed by fire on September 8, 2007 and the projected completion of the new Headquarters Building is in 2011.
