MCAS New River: Overview

MCAS New River is a helicopter base in Jacksonville, North Carolina.  Occupants of this base are the Marine Aircraft Group 29 and the Marine Aircraft Group 26.

In 1941, the land, which now houses MCAS New River, was a tobacco farm and was purchased for the Marine Corps for the purpose of housing aircraft in support of amphibious operations.  This area experienced many name changes, and in 1968, it was recommissioned as Marine Air Station (Helicopter) New River, transforming it from a small training area to a major operational field.

MCAS New River: Location

This air station is located in the eastern part of North Carolina four miles south of Jacksonville.  It is near Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and does share some facilities with Camp Geiger.  Other communities in the area include Piney Green, NC, Havelock, NC, New Bern, NC, Kinston, NC, Wilmington, NC, Goldsboro, NC, Washington, NC, Greenville, NC, Wilson, NC, Smithfield, NC, Dunn, NC, Tarboro, NC, Rocky Mount, NC, Fayetteville, NC, Clayton, NC.

MCAS New River: Interesting Facts

  • In 1972, the airfield was named McCutcheon Field after Brigadier General Keith B. McCutcheon, who was one of the fathers of Marine Corp helicopter aviation. The air strip still holds this name today.
  • This air station was the first Marine Corps Base with the MV-22 Osprey. The aircraft has the capability to fly like an airplane, and to take off and land like a helicopter as well.
  • MCAS New River boasts the presence of many beautiful beaches on the Atlantic Ocean.
  • The entire state of North Carolina enforces the "Move Over" law. The purpose of the law is to protect law enforcement officers who may be standing outside their car. All motorists, while driving on all NC roads or highways, must either move to the other lane or stop when passing a police car that is pulled over to the side of the road
