MCB Quantico: Overview

Marine Corps Base (MCB) Quantico is an installation that, due to the numerous and vital missions conducted on it, has tremendous importance to the USMC. Think of it as the “Swiss Army Knife” of Marine Corps installations. First, it is one of the most significant training installations in the United States Marine Corps. Second, it is the home of the USMC Combat Development Command, which is responsible for formulating the battlefield tactics and strategic movements of Marines in the field. In addition, the MCB Quantico maintains the Marine Corps Research Center. This entity conducts research and development, focusing on telecommunications. A number of other units are stationed on this installation as well.

The Marine Barracks, Quantico was established in 1917 due to the fact that the Commandant of the Marine Corps, General George Barnett, thought that the Marines were in need of an installation near Washington D.C. The training of Marines, including officers, began here shortly thereafter and continues to this day. In fact, the OCS of the Marine Corps is still at MCB Quantico.
