MCLB (Marine Corps Logistics Base) Albany, GA

Albany, GA 31704  |  Base Operator: DSN: 567-5000, (229) 639-5000

MCLB Albany: Overview

The major mission of MCLB Albany is directed to the rebuilding and repair of ground combat units and their equipment, as well as, to support the United States East Coast installations.  The Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow, California is the only other facility similar to MCLB Albany.  At present, the Marine Corps Logistics Command’s Maintenance Center is the primary facility located at MCLB Albany and the Marine Corps Logistics Command, which is one of the Corp’s major commands, is also housed at this base.  This major command includes duties performed at both the Barstow, California and Jacksonville, Florida bases.

This base was designated as the Marine Corps Depot of Supplies in the early 1950’s because of its level land, its suitable access to the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, its easy accessibility by road and rail and because of its inland position which would lessen the likelihood of saltwater corrosion of the equipment which was stored there.  This area also provided a very adequate workforce.

MCLB Albany: Interesting Facts

  • Colonel A. E. Dubber selected the site for this base and from the onset he was adamant that trees and wildlife were to be preserved as much as possible and, because of this directive, the area is bordered with pecan orchards and oak trees. An oak tree, designated the Dubber Oak, still graces the main gate of this base.
  • Archaeologists have discovered Indian artifacts predicted to be more than 8,000 years old on the base. Ancient tools, such as flint knives and scrapers, as well as arrowheads, have been found indicating that there is a good possibility the area could have been a trading or supply post for Native Americans.
