The units that conduct operations on Royal Air Force Station (RAF) Menwith Hill are responsible for maintaining communications and providing intelligence to forces of both the United States and the United Kingdom. RAF Menwith Hill is located in the UK and is subsequently commanded by an officer of the RAF. However, the USAF has a significant presence on this base through the 421st Air Base Group.

During the Cold War, RAF Menwith Hill was an extremely important installation from an intelligence collection standpoint. Even the National Security Agency (NSA) took over as the entity responsible for the intelligence mission for the better part of the 1960’s. As technology continue to expand and improve, the mission eventually benefitted from the use of satellites.
