Ramstein Air Base: Overview

Ramstein Air Base (AB) is an extremely important installation to not only the United States, but also to our NATO allies. NATO has a significant presence on the base, which is made up of personnel from 11 different countries. Besides the American presence, the other countries represented at Ramstein AB include Belgium, Canada, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, and Poland. In addition, the United States Air Forces in Europe (USAFE) has set up its HQ at Ramstein.

The first American use of the airfield assets, which are now on Ramstein AB, was toward the end of WWII. The Army Air Force occupied and utilized the airfield to support the allied advance. However, a significant American presence did not occur until 1953 during the Cold War. During the Cold War timeframe, Ramstein supported a number of different missions. Fighters, fighter-bombers, bombers, air refueling aircraft, and reconnaissance aircraft were all deployed from Ramstein at some point.

Ramstein Air Base: Location

The namesake of this installation is the nearest town, which is obviously Ramstein. It is located in the district of Kaiserslautern in the state of Rheinland-Pfalz. Other communities located nearby include, Steinwenden, Germany, Weitersbach, Germany, Obermohr, Germany, Miesenbach, Germany, Mackenbach, Germany, Rodenbach, Germany, and Weilerbach, Germany.

Ramstein Air Base: Interesting Facts

  • The 86th Airlift Wing (86 AW) is the host entity on Ramstein AB in Germany.
  • The area that is now Ramstein AB was once used by the Luftwaffe during WWII.
  • One of the worst air show catastrophes, which killed 67 spectators and three pilots, took place on Ramstein. In addition to the casualties, 346 spectators were suffered significant injuries. This tragedy was the result of a mid-air collision of an Italian Air Force demonstration team.
