Robins AFB: Overview

Robins Air Force Base was named in honor of Brigadier General Augustine Robins, who is known as the Air Forces “Father of Logistics”, on April 26th, 1943. It houses the Warner Robins Air Logistics Center (WR-ALC), which is responsible for the worldwide management and maintenance of the C-5 Galaxy, the F-15 Eagle, and the C-130 Hercules aircraft. In addition, the WR-ALC is responsible for the U-2 Dragon Lady, all Air Force helicopters, and all special operations aircraft and their associated avionics systems. The base employs a workforce of more than 25,584 civilian, contractor, and military personnel. The host unit of Robins AFB is the 78th Air Base Wing, who provides support for the WR-ALC.

Construction of Robins AFB began in October of 1941. Army Colonel Charles Thomas was selected to oversee the construction and decided to name the base after his mentor, Brigadier General Augustine Robins, who had passed away suddenly in June of 1940. The base was originally called the Wellston Air Depot at Robins Field, and later became the name that it is known by today. The site that was to become Robins AFB was originally chosen because of its proximity to the main rail line, flat land, water supply, and the inexpensive price of the land and labor. Robins has since played a vital role in all of the major U.S.-involved conflicts: World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, the Cold War, and the Persian Gulf War.
