Patrick AFB: Overview

Patrick Air Force Base (AFB) maintains a number of different missions, the most notable of which is the deployment of satellites and execution of various space-launch activities. The 45th Space Wing (45 SW), which falls under the command of the Air Force Space Command (AFSPC), is located at Patrick AFB. Additionally, the 45th Space Command is responsible for maintaining and conducting activities at Cape Canaveral.

This base was originally established as a naval air station back in 1940. The mission of this installation was to deploy seaplanes to patrol the southeastern coast of the United States during World War II. Following WWII, the base was deactivated for a few years. The USAF eventually reopened the base in order to establish it as a proving ground.

The Banana River runs to the west of the installation and the Atlantic Ocean is to the east.   • This installation was originally an air station assigned to the U.S. Navy, known as the Naval Air Station Banana River.
