Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB) BenefitsThe Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB) Provides Funds for a Formal EducationMontgomery GI Bill Benefits: OverviewA new version of the GI Bill, the Montgomery GI Bill or the MGIB, was introduced in 1984 by Congressman Gillespie V. Montgomery of Mississippi. Congressman Montgomery, being a World War II veteran, understood the value that the bill provided to veterans and truly believed that the country should make educational benefits available to service members. His point was that a college degree combined with the training and experience received in the military will help to develop our service members and veterans, which will make them tremendous assets to the country. Congressman Montgomery also pushed for the overhaul of recruiting efforts in order to improve the overall quality of the country’s volunteer military. Education was at the forefront of this initiative, hence the importance of the Montgomery GI Bill. The Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB) allowed service members to voluntarily forfeit $100 per month for the first 12 months of their service commitment in order to receive non-taxable funds towards a formal education. These funds were paid out on a monthly basis and were meant to cover most costs associated with the pursuit of a college degree. There was a maximum amount that could be reached, ending the benefit. The maximum amount has increased over the years to offset the rising costs of tuition. In addition, the benefit expired after 36 months. Finally, the Montgomery GI Bill had to be used within 10 years following separation from the Armed Forces. Unfortunately, too many service members that earned the Montgomery GI Bill benefit do not use it to their advantage. In fact, it was determined that approximately half of the troops that have earned the Montgomery GI Bill benefit by forfeiting $100 per month for the first month of active-duty service have not used it (Gilmore, 2007). Part of the reasons for this may be due to the fact that service members do not realize that it can be used for other educational and training opportunities, such as certification programs, on-the-job training, and apprenticeship programs.
