The decision to go to college for military members is a difficult one to make, since it requires sacrificing time that can be spent with the family and friends. The GI Bill was originally introduced during World War II as the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944. Senator Chuck Hagel (2005) once stated that the “GI Bill ensured that all who served this nation would not be penalized as a result of time away from their careers and communities in service to their country" (p. 5). With millions of servicemen returning to the United States following their service during World War II, it was necessary to provide them with the resources to obtain an education to pursue opportunities in the workforce; the same opportunities that they defended for Americans back home.
