Military Spouse Benefits

The Benefits Available to a Military Spouse are Well Deserved

Military Spouse Benefits: Overview

Many of our military members are fortunate to have the love and support of a military spouse and /or military dependents. They fully understand the sacrifices made by our service members, and they are required to make a number of sacrifices as well. When a service member gets deployed, the military spouse is left behind to handle all of the couple’s affairs. Oftentimes, this puts the military spouse in almost a single parent situation for a number of months. Not only do the domestic responsibilities of the military spouse increase, but so does the stress of handling these responsibilities while worrying about the welfare of the service member on deployment.

It is only fitting that benefits are provided to the military spouse. These benefits help to ease some of the stress involved in the military spouse lifestyle. One benefit, which is the transferability of education benefits through the Post-9/11 GI Bill, has been well received. In fact, Robert E. Clark, who is the assistant director of accession policy for the office of the undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness, reported that as of April 21, 2010, there have been over 100,000 requests from service members to transfer available education benefits to a military spouse or to a dependent. These requests have resulted in over 240,000 military spouses and dependents receiving months of education benefits (Kruzel, 2010). This availability of education funds to the military spouse can certainly ease the financial burden on a military family.

The recent recession has actually increased enlistment rates and much of that has to do with the benefits provided not only to the military member, but also to the military spouse and military dependents. Jones (2009) reported that “Among the benefits are recruiting bonuses up to $40,000, health care for service members and their families, paychecks that include housing allowances and possible separation pay for overseas deployments, college tuition and home mortgage programs.” Military families may also qualify for the Family Separation Allowance, which includes an additional $250 per month in the event that a service member goes on an unaccompanied tour of duty.
