You have Earned Military Benefits through Your Dedicated Service

Military Benefits: Overview

Through the years of service on active duty, in the National Guard, or as a reservist, military members and veterans are eligible to take advantage of a wide variety of military benefits. These military benefits are owed to those who have dedicated their lives, or a significant portion of it, to the protection of the freedoms that we experience every day. Military service can be extremely taxing on an individual. A Military Benefitsmilitary career can be very stressful and can result in the onset of physical and mental challenges, so the military benefits provided to our service members is the very least that should be done in order to take care of these patriotic individuals.

There are literally hundreds of military benefits provided to military retirees and veterans, many of which are dedicated to assisting them acclimate to life as a civilian. For example, educational military benefits, better known as the GI Bill, are provided in order to cover the costs of college for our military members. Blumenstyk (2006) stated that, “The military is now spending nearly half a billion dollars a year in tuition assistance for the members of its active-duty force, more than double the amount it spent in the 2002 fiscal year. Military students can use this money from the Voluntary Education Program at any accredited college that they choose, and since 2001, tuition reimbursement has often been at 100 percent of students' costs” (p. A25). There have been many different versions of this benefit, and the most recent version is the Post-9/11 GI Bill.

Military benefits that are provided to our military members, retirees, and veterans are not only made available as a way to help them acclimate to life as a civilian, but some of them simply exist as fringe benefits of military service. One example of this type of benefit is the Space Available Travel, which is also known as Space “A” or military hops. This allows service members, retires, and family members to travel on Department of Defense aircraft after all duty related space is filled.

Military Benefits: Section Description

The military benefits section is an effort to provide detailed descriptions of the most important benefits made available to all service members, retirees, and veterans. The purpose behind military benefits is a noble one; however, it can be a difficult and confusing experience finding the information necessary to take advantage of them. The goal of this section is to show our service members, retirees, and veterans how to go about taking advantage of and to provide the latest news and information regarding military benefits.
