College for Military: Overview

Facing deployment and working hectic schedules is an everyday reality for servicemembers. Yet, many troops still find the time to earn advanced degrees. The decision to go to college for military members is a difficult one to make, since it requires sacrificing time that can be spent with the family and friends. However, it is a decision that will certainly pay dividends do to the fact that a degree is beneficial whether a servicemember decides to remain in the military or separate to pursue a career as a civilian.

Taking advantage of the GI Bill benefit is something that each military member should certainly do. Many civilians are forced to run up a tremendous debt due to the fact that they have to rely upon student loans in order to pay for a college education. As a servicemember, you have the opportunity to get your degree through a dedicated college for military members for free, since you have earned the GI Bill benefit.

The GI Bill was originally introduced during World War II as the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944. Senator Chuck Hagel (2005) once stated that the “GI Bill ensured that all who served this nation would not be penalized as a result of time away from their careers and communities in service to their country" (p. 5). With millions of servicemen returning to the United States following their service during World War II, it was necessary to provide them with the resources to obtain an education to pursue opportunities in the workforce; the same opportunities that they defended for Americans back home.
